Resort: Discovery Samal | Restaurant: Morning Catch | Location: Samal Island, Davao del Norte | Breakfast: Included in stay
Discovery Samal is one of the most premium resorts on Samal Island – stunning location, beautiful grounds, and yes, breakfast is included in your stay. Every morning, the buffet at Morning Catch Restaurant was waiting for us. Here’s a full walkthrough of everything on the table, plus our honest take on what’s worth going back for.
Morning Catch Restaurant – Location & Setup
Breakfast is served at Morning Catch Restaurant, located right beside the pool and the beach. The views alone make it worth waking up early – you’re eating with the sea in front of you and the resort in full morning light.
Seating options are available both inside and outside the restaurant. Choose your vibe: air-conditioned comfort inside, or fresh air and beach views outside.
Good to know before you load your plate: Halal-certified food is served inside the restaurant. The rest of the spread – including the meats and other stations – is set up outside. Plan accordingly.
The Indoor Buffet Spread
Here’s a full look at what’s waiting inside Morning Catch. The spread covers all the Filipino breakfast staples – and a few pleasant surprises.
Eggs & Omelette Station
A classic start to any resort breakfast. The station is well-stocked and a solid first stop before you work your way around the buffet.
Cold Cuts & Cheese
A lighter option for those who prefer something simple. Good selection, neatly presented.
Danggit Section
Here’s where it gets interesting. Danggit at a premium resort breakfast buffet. Crispy, flavorful, and served alongside garlic rice – it’s the kind of thing you don’t expect to find, and it immediately earns its place as the star of the indoor spread.
“If you grew up eating danggit for breakfast, this one will feel like home. If you haven’t tried it – this is a great place to start.”
Comfort Food Corner
Here’s the section for a warm, comforting start: lomi, champorado, and congee. The champorado alone is worth the early wake-up.
Main Dishes
A proper Filipino breakfast spread. Here’s what’s on the main table:
- Garlic rice & steamed rice
- Chopsuey
- Sweet & chili bangus
- Chicken adobo
The sweet and chili bangus was a highlight – good kick, not too heavy for a morning meal.
Bread, Pastries & More
A generous bread and pastries section with plenty of options. Cereals are also available for a lighter bite, alongside a well-stocked fruits section. The standout? Davao pomelo – fresh, sweet, and not something you always find at resort buffets.
⭐ Round 1 – Our Take
A solid, hearty breakfast with real variety. The danggit paired with garlic rice was the clear standout – genuinely one of the best things on the buffet. The bangus added a nice kick, and the champorado made the whole thing feel like a proper Filipino morning. We left our first plate very happy.
The Outdoor Buffet Spread
Step outside and here’s a whole second spread waiting for you. This is where breakfast gets serious.
Coffee & Beverages
The coffee and beverages station is set up outside – morning officially sorted. Grab a cup before you do your walkthrough.
Meat Section
- Pork barbeque
- Bacon
- Sausage
- Bread pudding
- Mashed potatoes
Not your typical breakfast combination, but the pork barbeque in the morning hits differently. No complaints.
Kids Corner
A dedicated section with burgers, donuts, cookies, pasta, and pancakes. A full spread on its own – and the pancakes are genuinely fluffy and fresh, not the flat, sad kind you get at most buffets.
The DIY Taho Station
And then we spotted it – a DIY taho station. Arnibal, sago, fresh tofu – you build your own. Warm, just sweet enough, and the hands-on setup makes it feel like more than just a dessert station. We went back for seconds. If you walk past this without trying it, you’ll regret it.
⭐ Round 2 — Our Take
The taho was the surprise of the morning – easily one of the most memorable parts of the entire buffet. The pasta was well-seasoned (not the bland buffet version you’d expect), and the pancakes were fresh enough to go back for more. We came back for more than we planned. That’s always the sign of a good buffet.
Day 2 – What Changed?
On Day 2, most of the spread looked familiar – but a few dishes were rotated in the main section and the meat selection. Enough variety to keep things fresh without feeling like a repeat. We left full again. No complaints at all.
Final Verdict – Is It Worth It?
Discovery Samal’s breakfast buffet is one of those inclusions that actually feels like a perk – not an afterthought. Here’s a quick summary of what makes it stand out:
✅ Filipino classics done right – danggit, bangus, adobo, champorado
✅ Fresh fruits including Davao pomelo – a rare find at resort buffets
✅ A proper meat spread outside with pork BBQ and bacon
✅ DIY taho station – the surprise highlight of the whole buffet
✅ Halal-certified options inside for Muslim guests
✅ Beautiful setting at Morning Catch – poolside and beachfront
✅ Day 2 rotation keeps it from feeling repetitive
If your stay here includes breakfast – and it should – come hungry. The view by the beach makes it even better. We left happy, we left full, and we’d wake up early for this again. 🌴
